DUPLICITY // A FREE CROCHET CARDIGAN PATTERN

The Duplicity Cardigan is very beginner friendly, with little to no shaping. The crochet cardigan is easily versatile and can be made with one color or, as I have, made with two of your favorite colors! In addition to being able to switch up the colors, the Duplicity beginner crochet cardigan is intentionally designed with bulky weight yarn, to make a faster make! That way you can spend more time flaunting the drip of your new crochet cardigan than making it!

What’s up with my beautiful stitches?! I was inspired to design this free crochet cardigan pattern because I wanted to finally be free and express my inner voice as a creator and frankly, as the grown ass woman I finally feel that I am. You know what I mean?

Too long I’ve let my and other voices and fear influence me and trap me. So from the emotional seeds of rebellion and wanting to assert my independence… I will be launching a new crochet pattern line! She will be named [drum roll please] Blaq Kieko.

There are several reasons why I have chosen the name Blaq Kieko. The first is the meaning behind the name. Blaq (pronounced black) symbolizes the hard fought pride I earned and now have in not only my uniqueness but of my melanin as well. Kikeo (pronounced Kee-Kee-Oh) is Japanese for “be happy”. This will represent my need and want to be happy and proud of my talents as a designer and to undertaste my happiness of the aforementioned blackness and uniqueness as a human existing in this place.

My second reason for choosing the name Blaq Kieko, would be to represent the melding of the two cultures that inspired this line of free crochet patterns. Those cultures being the vibrant and colorful japanese/anime culture and the sometimes darker and more somber urban and alternative culture.

Okay, so now that you know the method behind my madness, let’s get into the real reason you clicked on this blog post…the beautiful free crochet cardigan pattern!

SLEEVE SHAPING

[ALL SIZES]

Row 1: Attach yarn to the bottom corner of the sleeve, ch1, sc in base of ch1, sc dec in next st, sc in next st, rep from * to end of row, ch 5, turn.

Row 2: sc in 2nd ch from hk, sc in blps of each sc to end, join next st to sleeve edge with sl st, sl st in next st, ch1(does not count as sc here or throughout), turn.

Row 3: sc in blps of each sc to end, ch1, turn.

Row 4: sc in blps of each sc to end, join next st to sleeve edge with sl st, sl st in next st, ch1, turn.

Rep Alternating Rows of 3-4 until you reach the last stitch of sleeve edge. Fasten off, and weave in ends, move to Assembly.

ASSEMBLY

STEP 1 [ATTACHING FRONT AND BACK PANELS]: With WS facing attach front panels to the back panel, making sure to match the corresponding color to the back panel. You should have a few unworked stitches in the center of the back panel once the front panels have been attached. 4 (4, 4, 4, 4, 2, 2, 2, 2) unworked stitches.

STEP 2 [ATTACHING THE SLEEVES]: To attach the sleeves, find the center of the sleeve by folding the sleeve in half. Place the center of the sleeve to the center of the shoulder seam created when attaching the front and back panels. Again be sure to attach sleeves to the corresponding color.

STEP 3 [CREATING SIDE SEAMS]: Fold your work in half, where the WS are facing and your seams are facing outward. Once the work is folded it should look something like a “T”; with the sleeves facing out and making the line on top of the “T” and the front and back panels making the bottom of the “T”.  Once this is completed we can then seam the sides of the panels.

FINISHING

STEP 1[BOTTOM THE RIBBING]:

Row 1: Attach yarn to the bottom right corner of the left front panel on RS, ch 5, turn.

Row 2: sc in 2nd ch from hk, sc in blps of each sc to end, join next st to panel edge with sl st, sl st in next st, ch1(does not count as sc here or throughout), turn.

Row 3: sc in blps of each sc to end, ch1, turn.

Row 4: sc in blps of each sc to end, join next st to panel edge with sl st, sl st in next st, ch1, turn.

Rep Alternating Rows 3-4 until you reach the last stitch of Front Right panel edge, ch5. Do not fasten off, move to step 2 of finishing.

STEP 2 [ADDING THE COLLAR & FRONT PANEL RIBBING]:

NOTE: WHEN WORKING ALONG THE SIDES OF THE FRONT PANELS, YOU WILL NEED TO WORK EVENLY AS THERE IS NO CLEAR STITCHES TO WORK INTO. STITCHES WORKED TOO CLOSELY TOGETHER WILL PRODUCE A WARPED AND WONKY RIBBING.

Row 1: Rotate, panel 90 degrees to right, sc in 2nd ch from hk, sc in blps of each sc to end, join next st to the side panel edge with sl st, sl st in next st, ch1(does not count as sc here or throughout), turn.

Row 2: sc in blps of each sc to end, ch1, turn.

Row 3: sc in blps of each sc to end, join next st to panel edge with sl st, sl st in next st, ch1, turn.

Rep Alternating Rows 2-3 until you reach the last stitch of Front Right panel edge, ch5. Do not fasten off, move to step 2 of finishing.
